Why sort by action rather than by volume?
Volume says how many people search. It doesn’t say what your team should do on Monday. Two queries with the same volume can need opposite treatment: one left alone, the other pushed hard.
Why is Defend its own bucket?
Because the most common mistake with a page-one query is to “optimise” it: rewrite a page that’s already winning and lose the position it had. Defend means protect it and watch it. It’s a decision, not an absence of one.
Where does the work that moves numbers sit?
In Strike. Queries just behind page one are where a modest change produces a visible result, because the page is already close. That’s usually where a team’s week is best spent.
Isn’t Defer just ignoring things?
It’s ignoring them deliberately and saying so. On a typical site most queries are noise for now. Naming them as deferred lets a team stop feeling guilty about thousands of rows, concentrate on the few that matter, and revisit the rest when the picture changes.
