How is AIO ranking different from a normal Google ranking?

A normal ranking is a position in a list. An AI Overview doesn’t really have positions. It has sources. Your page can rank first in the links and still be absent from the AI Overview above it, or rank lower and be the source the Overview quotes.

What counts as ranking in an AI Overview?

Three outcomes, which should be tracked apart: cited (the Overview links to your page), named (it writes your brand with no link), and both. There’s also a fourth: the Overview exists and you’re not in it. That’s often the most useful one to know about, along with who is in it instead.

Why does AIO ranking matter?

Because the AI Overview is read first. When one is present, click-through on the links beneath roughly halves, and around one reader in a hundred clicks a link inside the summary (Pew Research Center, 2025). Where Overviews appear, being in the answer is increasingly where the attention goes.

How do you improve your AIO ranking?

Start by knowing where you stand: which of your searches carry an AI Overview, whether each one uses you, and which domains it uses instead. Then make the pages that matter the clearest, most directly usable answer to the question, and check they’re in a shape the Overview can use before you rewrite anything.

Nobody can guarantee a place in an AI Overview. The answers shift by time, place and person. What can be done reliably is measuring it honestly and closing the gaps that are visible.
